Troubleshooting Two or more Subwoofers

Information

When using two or more subwoofers, careful setup and tuning are essential to achieve accurate, powerful bass. Without proper calibration you can suffer from bloated low frequencies and reduced output. The most reliable results come from measurement-based tuning rather than by ear. For best results you should use a MiniDSP 2×4, and a UMIK‑1 measurement microphone, and a laptop. The subwoofer crawl method is NOT recommended when multiple subs are involved.

2 Steps and 2 videos:

  1. Begin by locating the optimal positions for your subwoofers. (See the linked tutorial video for placement guidance and recommended receiver settings.
  2. The second video walks through the entire process—from downloading REW and Mic Software/Cal file to aligning and EQing your subs and shows you how to use MiniDSP 2×4 HD. If you’ve already used a microphone and REW to establish placement, you can jump directly to the MiniDSP configuration section of that video here. Note: The menu in the MiniDSP have been changed a little bit in the newer versions since the video have been made.

Thanks to Home Theater Gamer and Home Theater Gurus for these great videos.

Things to check and think about below:

  • Try different subwoofer placements
  • Adjust subwoofer phase
  • Verify port tuning
  • Check polarity
  • Tune parametric EQ
  • Relocate or remove large furniture if it impacts response
  • Verify receiver settings (crossover, etc.)
  • Disable Audyssey LFC
  • Turn off “LFE+Main”
  • Disable “Dynamic EQ” and “Dynamic Volume”
  • Invert the polarity of the subwoofer(s) closest to the listening position

  • Remember to disconnect your speakers and run the tests with only  your Subwoofers
  • If you have mini DSP or other equlizers then remeber to reset the settings before you start to measure

Video 2 Subwoofer Tuning/EQ and Alignment

I recomend you to follw the Subwoofer placement video before you continue on this toturial.

This video is quite long but is taking you from start to finish. You get detailed explanations on how and why in each step trough the video. Follow this video and you will have a great end result.

Below you can see my results after following this guide

Below is a example 1 sub(orange) VS 4 subs(green), With more subs you can see the costitency and output is alot better.
